Beginning in January 2018 or possibly even sooner, we will offer you regular face to face as well as online addiction recovery support meetings using the 4-point approach of SMART Recovery.
The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program® helps people recover from all types of addiction and addictive behaviors. Addiction comes in many different forms and is not limited to physical substances that are inhaled, injected, or otherwise transferred into the body. It is increasingly possible for people to experience so-called behavioral addictions such as disordered eating, compulsive shopping, gambling, and many more all of which can be severely life-disruptive and highly destructive.
The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program offers tools and techniques for each program point:
1: Building and Maintaining Motivation
2: Coping with Urges
3: Managing Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors
4: Living a Balanced Life
We welcome you to join our meetings even if you …
- are not sure whether or not you are addicted
- have a concern about a behavior that currently only mildly impacts your daily life but you would like to understand it better before its severity increases
- have a loved one in active addiction, recovery, or in a state that concerns you
- appreciate a dynamic group environment that includes not only serious discussions but also light-heartedness and laughter
When and where is this going to happen?
Unless otherwise indicated, we will meet at the sanctuary farm which is conveniently located right between Frankfort and Lawrenceburg, KY. Depending on demand we will add meeting locations in other areas utilizing library conference rooms and other facilities. Always check our calendar for listed meetings.
Meeting at the sanctuary farm is like attending a mini-retreat. The peace of the surroundings and the presence of the rescued animals have their own way to enhance your own healing process.
Online meetings are conducted via Skype.
Can I attend an orientation first?
You sure can! We hold orientations every so often. Just know, that you do not have to attend an orientation in order to participate in our group meetings. You are welcome to just jump right in and join our group. If you prefer an orientation first, check our calendar of events for the next one.
What does participation cost?
Nothing! Participation is free of charge but we do pass the hat around at the end of the meeting collecting much-appreciated donations. We are a nonprofit organization and depend on donations to make our programs available.
Do I have to buy materials?
No. You do not have to spend money on any materials. However, we may at times recommend certain books and other helpful resources that are not free but are completely optional. For example, the organization SmartRecovery.org offers a handbook that can be very helpful for you as you learn about the SMART recovery tool and work through exercises. However, our facilitator will always bring copies of individual pages of various exercises for those who do not have the handbook in case we decide during our group meeting to complete a written exercise.
Are there group meetings for people with specific types of addictions?
There may be. This means if we receive a lot of interest from participants for subject-specific groups we may offer them. However, it does not matter what type of addiction or combination of addictions you have and what type(s) of addictions others in the group have. The four points of the SMARTrecovery program and the tools we use for urge coping etc. apply to all types of addiction and even to just regular life-circumstances. So don’t worry about whether others will understand what types of problems you are having. Just give us a try.
Is this program religion based?
No. Our program is religion-neutral. However, if several group members have a particular interest in exploring spiritual aspects based on a particular faith, we may conduct an extra meeting either online or face to face to exchange thoughts to explore this area of interest further. Everything SMARTrecovery can be integrated into your existing spiritual beliefs.
How do I sign up?
There is no formal sign-up process. However, it will be in everyone’s best interest if you send us a note letting us know that you are coming. We want to make sure to have adequate materials to hand out to everyone. Also, we do serve a light meal and refreshments and some of our meetings. It helps us greatly to know how many attendees to expect. Please check our calendar for dates and times.
